Featured Artist: Y-Not Tone

An Up and coming rap artist Antonio Walker, better known by the stage name, Y-Not Tone is the latest DC area rapper to throw his hat in the game. A talented writer and artist, Tone began his career at an early age freestyle flowing in local battles throughout the DMV area. Labeling music as his savior, Tone raps about the trials and tribulations of growing up in the inner city and witnessing friends being murdered, dope-dealing or sent to prison.

Tone’s on course to travel his own path and is determined to define who he is as a person and independent artist. Influenced by artist like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Common, Wale and J.Cole he knows the odds are against him, being hailed from the DC area where not many artists reach the level of success as their northern counterparts, but he’s up for the challenge. He says, “Every day is a struggle but I have to stay on my grind. I’ve been at the lowest of lows so the only way to go is up and that’s where I’m headed.”

Tone’s drive and passion are the qualities that will get him in the game and his determination will help him have staying power which is evident in his music and work ethic. “I can’t imagine a world without music. I love writing and rapping, and it inspires me so much, to know that people are moved by what I do. His style is raw, it’s real and it’s what I’ve been thru that makes it so much better.”

He just finished his debut mixtape, The Rough Draft, which will be dropping January 2012. The Rough Draft is the first tape in the series of three tapes that will mimic the English writing process. Tone’s approach with the series is to show off his rhyme versatility over classic beats like Talib Kweli Get By, Jay-Z Guns & Roses and Meek Mill 2011 street anthem I’ma Boss. The unique part about The Rough Draft is to make a mixtape that’s not fully mixed & mastered but still offer a great quality of music. This was purposely done with the concept of the mixtape series which The Rough Draft will be the only mixtape that use other artist beats. The final tapes in the series, The Revision and The Final Copy, will feature all original tracks. Y-Not Tone is looking forward to a big 2012.
